Peeling back some layers with a short story time from a few years back... I was already a fan of @williamsburgsalsaorchestra & @solangeprat, but it was Amanda's first time seeing them live. I was excited to go to the venue and show her around, and share a spectacular experience as I had in the past, on my own and with friends. The @brooklynbowl was packed with people eager to dance and celebrate. The lanes were booming and the bar was buzzing. Amanda was feeling uneasy and abit nervous because she isn't great with crowds and new places...but she didn't want to necessarily express it. No matter what was offered, I couldn't figure out what could be done to make her less fussy and more at ease. Food, beverages, moving to a quieter area, watching from the sidelines, even offering to just go home if it was too overwhelming... Despite my best efforts, I found it difficult to get her to settle in to enjoy the atmosphere and get a straight answer. What do I do?... (short story continued in comments)

It is a dance style focused on hip movement ,often combined with repeating linear steps, shuffled footwork and decorative figures. Salsa on1, often referred to as club style, is very popular in the northeast USA, and across the globe. It combines intricate jazzy footwork, turns, Spins, body movement and multiple direction changes in a line style structure. This energetic music is derived from afro cuban rhythms, and later combined with classical and jazz elements from across Europe and the USA. On this day, I reflect on moments where I have faced misunderstanding, where I have been misunderstood, and where I have to reach understanding. Fear can stir one's spirit, but compassion can rise above all situations. Choosing to be ignorant has consequences. History is a timeless and precious resource for wisdom we must not take for granted. I reflect on what I may outwardly represent and simultaneously hold inherently. It is up to us to decide how much of our spirit we give to one another and the world we live in. We must be brave in our decisions, but also tactful and discerning of the entitlement of society / others. We must be disciplined in our self nurturing and of the places we call home. There is only abundance if we behave in it's process. I also reflect on where I have found peace, shelter, kinship, & appreciation. I remember my chosen friends, family & homes. I recount the many privelages that I share, and also those that I've earned. I find joy in education, music, nurturing my plants, indulging my inner child, & moments of stillness. These are facets of my humanity & purpose. I am grateful for what is, & what is to be. I wish for this same liberty for all Indigenous communities.

Baila Con Gusto CT Studio in New Haven is celebrating 4 Years on Saturday April 5th, 830pm - 1230am! At 57 Olive St. New Haven CT 06511. Everyone is invited to celebrate with us! As I go down memory lane, I am proud to share the nostalgia I feel when I look at past promos. #throwbackthursday It's bittersweet and interesting to see all the different moments and people thru the years. Some people fell in love with the world of Latin social dance at our studio, others came in with something to prove to themselves - And others only visited occasionally for the vibes. Some are still dancing, some have moved on, and some still come by and visit from around the world 🌎🕺🏾💃🏽 It is such a privilege to have shared in these moments with so many different people. The honor of hosting is special, but definitely not an easy one. I have been blessed with supportive students and friends over the years that have helped make these moments possible. The work of managing a space, an environment, a brand, a classroom, an event is at times complicated, but mostly gratifying. Especially when people get to celebrate a birthday, invite someone dear to share a dance, give themselves a second chance to enjoy something from their past, or just discover something new. There have been countless laughs, sweaty embraces, and singalongs while dancing 🎶🎉 The community that we dance instructors and business owners call ours, is always evolving. The type of people that come in, the dance styles in fashion, the music artists, the world events that influence our time off the dance floor, all play significant parts. The core of what Baila Con Gusto CT Studio continues to be, still persists today. Despite the naysayers, this studio is a place where anyone can give themselves a chance to learn and take their first step into the Latin social dance community. I am grateful for all the lessons; given & received. I am thankful for all the moments shared with friends & acquaintances. This is my canvas... Ima paint it how I want it baby. This month, I am celebrating 4 years of opening Baila Con Gusto CT Studio in New Haven. 4 years in residence at St Pj's Church, literally working my way from Undercroft to the main Parish Hall. Humble beginnings, made possible by kind friends, curious strangers, and faithful dedication to the craft & community I work with. I started Baila Con Gusto CT as a solo endeavor back around 2017, even though I had delved into teaching a bit earlier across CT, mostly thru peer support. What started as a side project of curiosity, then evolved into more exploration, collaborations with different businesses, working with different studios, and learning the ins and outs of teaching in the dance community. As time passed, I expanded my vision and what Baila Con Gusto CT really meant. Exploration, education, expression, friendship and appreciation for Caribbean & Latin Culture. In 2021, a friend of the WhitneyVille cultural commons connected me to a space in New Haven, that was looking for someone willing to share in a co - op space. This meant I would have to clean up, maintain and invest in the space. I said why not; I have the stimmy, a community of people I taught and met through Yale, and the curiosity of people eager for my next move. Through the pandemic and beyond, my girlfriend and dance partner @duvalldanceandadventures has been a great support and addition to what Baila Con Gusto CT to offers. When the New Haven studio opened up, she assisted with classes for several months, led team programs and also shared input on the offerings. Additionally, I had very faithful and early supporters like @coolwhipjulio , @noemaldi819, @cerdamania and more. As classes & socials continued, we masked up, sanitized, made friends and memories. I remember some friends also helped me put up the lights around the mirrors after some late night classes. These lights then became the signature look, and we filled up the space with music and joy. It was a testament to the darkness we had survived, and a beacon of hope of what could eventually be. Life is more beautiful when we dance, so dance with joy 😊💙
